“HE SAID WHAT?” KATIE said to Dana as they drove off from the Town Hall back to the Victorian.

“Oh, Katie, it was so touching. He told me that garbage couldn’t never dampen my beauty.”

“Well, he’s the one then.”

“Katie.”

“Seriously, cuz. If you’re covered in trash and smell like rotten food and he still thinks you’re a princess, he’s the one.”

Dana playfully rolled her eyes. She then turned the steering wheel to the left as she made a turn on Crom Street toward their home. “I don’t know if he’s the one, Katie. He was just being nice.”

“Wait a minute. Did he wrinkle his nose when he first saw you covered in trash?”

“Well, you were there. Come to think of it, no.”

“I didn’t see it either. Not from where I was standing. But you know what I did see?”

“What?”

“His eyes. He looked at you as if you were an adorable little kitten caught in the trash.”

Dana’s heart galloped in her chest. She felt warmth creep around her. “Really?” she said softly.

“Really, cuz. Listen, I know you swore you won’t get your heart crushed again ...and trust me, I’ve been there with men, too. I’m divorced, remember?”

“I do, Katie. And I’m so sorry that you’re being dragged into this Shags murder investigation, too.”

“Yeah, me too. I didn’t like her. Even her name reminds me of what she did to my ex-husband. But she didn’t deserve to be murdered. Especially over the holidays.”

“I know.” Dana pulled up to the curb near the Victorian.

“Anyway, don’t let that stop you from dating and meeting somebody else, cuz. That’s all I’m saying. Look how many times Grandma Rae was married.”

“True. She never gave up on finding true love. But she was from a different school of thought, cuz. Besides, her husbands didn’t leave her by choice. They all...well, kind of expired.”

“I know. But give this guy a chance.”

“I don’t know, Katie. I really can’t handle another broken heart if it doesn’t work out. Besides, right now,” she said, reaching into her pocket to feel for the torn letters she’d found in the garbage. “We’ve got to get down to the bottom of Shags’ murder!”
